Danish Smørrebrød. A recipe from Denmark…with love!

I’ve been in Denmark exactly seven years ago (i would say another life 🙁 ) and i desperately fell in love with this incredible country, with its lovely, cute and polite people and with the Danish Smørrebrød!

What is a Smørrebrød?

Well, it’s the typical Danish open sandwich, usually made with three main ingredients:

  • butter
  • smoked salmon
  • rye bread

Danish Smørrebrød: my lighter versions.

Making those open sandwiches is not easy. It’s more than easy! 😉

As i said, the butter – spread on the bread – is one of the main ingredients, but I’d rather use EVO olive oil: lighter, less fat and certainly more digestible!

The Danish use rye bread, but If you don’t have it, no problem! I saw (and ate) white bread Smørrebrød also, so you can use whatever bread you have at home!

And here, a pair of classic versions – with no butter – i prepared last weekend:

1) EVO olive oil, arugula, smoked salmon, sweet green olives, lemon juice topping

Danish Smørrebrød

2) EVO Olive oil, avocado, smoked salmon, Grana Padano cubes.

However, because a lot of people are not so crazy about arugula and its bitter aftertaste, we can replace it with a large green leaf of lettuce: the result will be a colorful crispy and good looking Smørrebrød!

Just remember to use a “green” ingredient: it might sound weird, but the green is the most important color in a plate composition. 😉

Making a Smørrebrød: culinary creativity with a little bit of Denmark.

During my Danish trip, i ate those sandwiches almost every day – most likely at lunchtime – and i never got tired of them: eggs and bacon; pickles and smoked salmon; red beets and herrings…There are so many different types and with so many different ingredients, that you might want to try all of them!

Moreover, the best thing is that they are very easy to prepare, because you can really use whatever is in the kitchen!

Therefore, if you are going to have unexpected guests for an unexpected dinner, or aperitif, or if you really don’t know what finger food you should make to delight your guests, the key is in this special sandwich: easy, delicious, colorful, simply awesome…

…Like my beloved Denmark!
